Sanctus

Sanctus

"We were nearing the end of a long week in the studio, Grant Pittman, Sean Carter, and myself, tracking acoustic guitar and vocals. On all the other songs we recorded guitar and vocals separately, but we decided to record them simultaneously on "Sanctus." After several takes, we thought we had captured at least one good enough to keep. I stepped out of the 5' x 5' sound isolation room into the control room to listen with the guys. We found the take we thought was the one, listened to it a couple times, and Grant said, "I think you still have a better one in you." Sean and I didn't want to agree, but we knew Grant was right. So we ran out to grab some lunch and came back refueled to go after it again. I stepped into the isolation room, tuned up, and was ready to go with take 27, when I heard Sean's voice in my headphones. He said a quick prayer, and then, "Ryan, sing it as if the earth is NOT full of God's glory." And so it was that the very next take, a haunting, whispered plea to God to fill the earth with his glory became the take we used on the album. The clock you hear on the track is an old Irish grandfather clock. If you listen carefully, it chimes 6 times at the end of the song, one shy of 7, the number of completeness. One day the earth will be completely full of God's glory, but until then, the clock of our watching, waiting, pleading lives ticks on." (Ryan Flanigan)
