Let Love Be The Anchor

Let Love Be The Anchor

”Love. What it really is, what it looks like, how it shapes our relationships, communities and lives can often be confusing when we’re surrounded by many loud voices telling us different things that often oppose one another.

At the beginnings of Micah and I discovering romance I was bombarded by fear, anxiety and felt unable to define what I thought what love was. I knew that in this moment I couldn’t trust my emotions and feelings. I sat down and wrote these words as an honest prayer asking God to show me the true, living and substantial kind of love that I knew I needed to discover.

We sang this song as one of the hymns during our beautiful wedding service as we served communion to each other. I’m so thankful for the kindness and mercy of God and the beauty of the community around us that has helped us discover love as an anchor.

I didn’t know the significance or how symbolic the anchor was to the church through the ages until only very recently. My friend Ethan Spivey writes:

“In the early beginnings of the church, the anchor was the main symbol of hope for Christians as they faced persecution and imprisonment. In the midst of despair, they would look to the anchor as the source of hope, that in Jesus Christ as the anchor, their faith could endure anything to inherit the promise of salvation to them. Let Love be the anchor that gives us hope and endures to inherit the promise before us.”

I hope that this song provides people with a prayer for the love of Jesus to be revealed, known and enjoyed.” (Matthew Macaulay)

Let love be the anchor
And mercy the vessel
Am F G
Let tides of your grace abound
Dm G
With oceans of healing
And waters of kindness
The seas of your hope surround

Let light be the compass
And truth my direction
The stars in your hand my guide
With sunbeams to follow
And moonlit expanses
From you no dark shadows can hide

Let peace be the lighthouse
And stillness it's candle
The source of assurance so deep
With pastures to lie in
And mercy to follow
Let love be the anchor I keep

Let joy be the harbour
And laughter it's high walls
My strength in the storms and waves
With floodgates of blessing
And watchmen devoted
The safety of home is your name
