Song Of The Three Young Men

Song Of The Three Young Men

"The text for this song appears in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer as a canticle to be said or sung during Morning Prayer. However, in our copy of the BCP there is no music to accompany the words. So, instead of looking for one of the traditional musical settings, we decided to compose our own. The text appears in some traditions in the Book of Daniel. Others consider it apocryphal. Anglicans use it liturgically, but consider it non-canonical. The "Three Young Men" are Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who praise God for miraculously sparing their lives in the fiery furnace. And although the BCP refers to it as Canticle 13, "A Song of Praise," and Benedictus es, Domine, we thought it apropos to go with its fourth reference, "Song Of The Three Young Men," since we also happen to be three young men who composed this new tune. The text's three stanzas of four lines and its lyrical repetition made it one of the easier prayerbook canticles to set verbatim. And it's content of high praise elicited an energetic and bouncy feel." (Ryan Flanigan)
