"Why long for a future heaven when heaven is here?
Why waste time trying to convince people to say a prayer for their heaven ticket, when we can show them heaven through the love of Christ?
People, especially Christians, naturally think in binary terms. Right or wrong. Light and dark. White and black. Heaven and Hell.
This is what keeps us from experiencing layers upon layers of mystery, newness, awakening, nuance, difference, and love. We can truly enjoy the present and presence if we would realize that heaven is here and heaven is now.
Is there a future heaven for us where the past souls currently reside and have found eternal peace? Possibly. No one really knows what this means or what this looks like, but the Christian faith stands on the hope that one day Christ will return to make all things new and restore what is broken – a new heaven and earth for all people. Could this heaven and earth be the same?
Where we get off track is when we try to place this future glory in our hands by aiding Christ in helping him decide who is in and who is out.
This is an absolute waste of time for Christians and is an attempt to play God.
Our only mission must be to bring the Gospel to all and we mistakenly think this is convincing people to say the “Sinner’s Prayer” (this doesn’t even exist in the Bible), when really it is about encompassing the love and ethos of Jesus Christ so all may be loved and not forgotten.
Hell is a present state for many people, and the love of Christ can help people experience heaven. The song Heaven’s Here is about the equality of all people and the cultural differences that make up the face of God. When we are gathered together in peace, joy, and harmony singing the words “Hallelujah,” there can be no greater picture of a present heaven. We must stop looking in the distance for heaven and in the distance for God, but realize that God is in our midst, dancing all around us, and when we are with our sisters and brothers pursuing this love together, Christ smiles as his children hit the mark.
When we choose to not be colorblind but celebrate the different colors found in the skin of God, we are experiencing heaven.
When we choose peace over violence, we are engaging with a heavenly spirit. When we choose singing over cursing, we are engaging with a beautiful sound. When we love over hate, we are choosing heaven over hell.
Heaven’s here. Let’s sing Hallelujah.

Heaven's Hear was written after lunch on the balcony of our Airbnb. Britt, Will, and myself talked about wanting to write something fun and communal that we could move to. LOL. The collaboration and unity we experience regularly with Common Hymnal inspired us. We wrote it and it had a country/soulful feel. When we recorded it, it morphed into a tribal/island feel, and we loved it. I think my favorite verse is "When we lay our burdens down, we will stand on common ground"....The thought behind that is that we all have burdens and struggles whether it be (family, societal, financial, mental, emotional, physical) but the act of relinquishing them all to Jesus, allows us to all stand on common ground. The bible describes Cherubim and Seraphim facing each other and shouting God's praises back and forth to each other., creating the mercy seat...... I pray this song leads people into dancing and grooving as they call Heaven to Earth and build each other up as Heaven manifests in the midst.
